Workplace Misconduct & Toxic Corporate Culture: Don't Let It Be

Updated: Nov 4

ree

It is estimated that approximately 75% of workplace harassment and about 55% of all company wrongdoing in general goes unreported (workplace harassment stats) (workplace wrongdoing stats). Reasons include fear of retaliation, the belief that reporting won't lead to change, and uncertainty about the reporting process.

I can say for a fact that retaliation is indeed a danger, as I was once let go from a company after reporting many of my boss’ mistakes, insults, and unethical behaviors. I do want to point out two things, however. First, my boss had an unhealthy relationship with a higher-up at the company, and second, most everyone was aware of their behavior but no one else spoke out about it.

But imagine if our entire department had gone together to the human resources department to complain about our manager, truthfully pointing out their faux pas and misconduct. Many of their actions were against company policy and were unethical or illegal and would need to be addressed per HR policy. Their entire department could not be let go, from a business standpoint. There is power in numbers, and we need to see this and understand it.

If we continue to allow toxic corporate culture to breed and expand, we will never get rid of it. If we, on the other hand, collectively stand up to it, just as we would march in protest to a political issue, corporate leaders would have to acknowledge the situation and take action.

While I understand that keeping one's job is important, sometimes there are larger issues to address, and by joining together we are likely to secure our jobs as a team and have a chance of abolishing the abhorrent behavior.
